Equality and Diversity in NHS Bristol
NHS Bristol, as a supplier of health services, a promoter of
health and an employer of people, is committed to
eliminating discrimination, advancing equality of
opportunity and fostering good
relations between different groups of
people.
The Equality Act 2010 provides protection from discrimination on
the basis of: age, disability (including physical impairment and
mental health problems), gender re-assignment, marriage/civil
partnership, pregnancy/maternity, race (including nationality and
ethnic origin), religion/belief, sex (men and women) and sexual
orientation (lesbian, gay and bisexual people).
We aim to commission inclusive and accessible
services, delivered in a way that respects the needs of
each individual. To turn this commitment into reality, our draft
Equality Objectives for 20l2-2013 are:
i)
Objective 1: Improve our equalities data and
intelligence in order to better inform the Joint Strategic Needs
Assessment and Joint Health and Wellbeing Strategy, influencing the
commissioning of services
ii)
Objective 2: Develop an equality assurance process
in our commissioning cycle, through the “making it contractual”
workstream, enabling us to more effectively hold our providers to
account over their equality performance
iii)
Objective 3: Improve the awareness of NHS services
by our diverse communities, by targeting at least one distinct
group from each of the following protected characteristics: Race;
Disability; Sexual Orientation
NHS Bristol is being abolished In April 2013 and the Bristol
Clinical Commissioning Group will take over responsibility for the
PCT’s commissioning functions. Bristol CCG will adopt the finalised
version of these Equality Objectives and will review them after the
first year of its operation.

we are trying to achieve our Equality Objectives (both in the
